    Description

We are delighted to offer this We are delighted to offer this very rare hand carved obsidian golden black crystal, and obsidian rock crystal chess set, from the 1960s. These rich black natural volcanic glass pieces feature an iridescent gold shimmer when exposed to direct light. The obsidian stone is said to be an excellent source for removing negativity. The rock crystal obsidian pieces offer a stunning contrast to the deep black pieces. All the pieces are finished with a high, smooth gloss. Each piece represents its own unique, museum quality sculpture. The king measures approximately 4.5” high and portrays an Aztec Mayan Prince warrior tribal leader. The set was made in the 1960s. The accompanying pieces feature South American kings and warriors donning resplendent headdress.
The set is gently used with nicks as well as a blemish to one piece. This is shown in the last photo.
The pieces are housed in the case that was with it at the time of purchase, which may not be original to the set. The hinged lid (slightly loose) opens to reveal a wood lined interior with a clean space for storage. All the brass fittings are intact.
The pieces are complimented by a seldom seen handcrafted chessboard. Under the glass playing surface are black squares alternating with squares of inlaid iridescent blue morpho butterfly wings. The colors of the butterfly wings seem to fluoresce as the blue changes to green and then to brown. The chessboard itself glows even in low light. Each square is separated by gold trim. The chessboard has a laminated rosewood frame that blends well with the colors of the dark chess pieces. The frame measures approximately 20”x20”.
There are blemishes in two of the butterfly squares in the the upper left corner of the photo of the chessboard. Please zoom in for a close look at the squares. The frame of the chessboard has a scattering of nicks and dings, but is still very nice for its age.
The back of the chessboard has its original “Made in Brazil" label. While butterfly wing artworks were made popular in the Art Deco period, production ended in the 1950s, which dovetails with the production of the chess pieces. These items, both hand crafted, are from completely different parts of the world, yet each beautifully compliments the other.
We appreciate your careful review of the photos as they tell so much more than we can articulate; and ask that you zoom in for a closer look at any and all condition issues.
